Ethereum Creator Announces Implementation Of Network Scaling System – Sharding
Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin announced upcoming implementation of sharding, a scaling solution for the Ethereum blockchain protocol.
Sharding is a solution that optimizes the process of verifying transactions and smart contracts by breaking up the blockchain network into parts called shards. Sharding allows to "attach" a certain node to a specific block, hence helping to verify a transaction faster. Previously, verification required from each node to go through the entire transaction history in the Ethereum blockchain network.
The need to verify transactions with all nodes limits the scalability of blockchain. As a result, the number of transactions is limited to 3-7 per second in the Bitcoin network, and to 7-15 in the Ethereum network.
After sharding, the Ethereum network will partially move from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). That will significantly accelerate the formation of new blocks.
