Benefits Of Using Blockchain Technology In Education Sector

Blockchain Technology In The Education Sector

Blockchain technology has been one of the most-discussed new technological trends in the past decade, ever since it arrived as a technology that supported Bitcoin in 2009. Since then, the attention started to shift from cryptocurrencies to blockchain technology, until it was discovered that blockchain's potential is so great that cryptocurrencies can be viewed as only one of its potential applications.

These days, blockchain has countless potential uses in almost every sector and industry out there. However, while its most disruptive use cases are certainly in the financial industry, healthcare, or supply chains, blockchain integration in the education sector should also not be overlooked.

Blockchain in education systems

For years, we have been listening to criticism of the education sector, comments about its outdated technologies and methods. It is clear even at first glance that education lacks improvement. This has already started to change in recent years thanks to the edtech market, which has been growing rather quickly. Various programs, such as virtual reality and personalized learning through the means of artificial intelligence are already being developed and used to an extent, all with the goal of improving learning.

It is entirely possible that smart classrooms might be the improvement everyone has been waiting for, and that they are not that far off. However, one thing to realize is that even their impact might end up being significantly greater if combined with blockchain technology. With the blockchain adoption growing larger and larger, it is possible that this technology will reach most schools in the world in the following years. But, to understand how blockchain can help in this sector, it might be useful to observe its usage in other areas and industries.

Blockchain brings better security

Obviously, security and privacy are among the top concerns around the world, even more so due to increases in hacking attacks, malware infections, and data thefts. While adults are vulnerable to such issues, and they can end up having massive problems if they become victims of such attacks — it is even more important to protect children's data from bad actors.

Industries like healthcare and finances have been the first to encounter these issues, and they are already working on resolving them and preventing further incidents by implementing blockchain technology. With that in mind, there is no reason why schools would not be the sector that would follow in their footsteps, particularly considering how much data belonging to young children is being kept on their servers.

While the process of putting this data into blockchain may be slow, it would ultimately serve the greater good, as all data stored on blockchain is completely immutable, while it is almost impossible to take control over the entire chain.

College security and degree verification

Wherever there are large storages of data, there are hackers trying to obtain it. While their focus is mainly on financial and healthcare industries, education is not really that far behind in terms of data breaches. In fact, it is sometimes even more popular of a target, as some statistics claim that this was the sector with the most breaches in 2017. This particularly includes student data.

While hackers cannot profit particularly much by obtaining students' financial records, their data is still highly valued, as it remains stored in the college database even when they leave the schools in search of jobs. This data can then be used for the creation of fake identities, or it can simply be sold on the dark web.

The use of blockchain would easily make all of the modern attacks ineffective, thus protecting students' records, identities, and privacy. Furthermore, doing so would allow students to easily prove they have a degree, as well as show when it was obtained. This is important as many claim to have a degree when they actually do not have one. In other words, employers would have a confirmation that their candidates are truly as capable as they claim.

Other potential uses of blockchain in the education sector

Apart from these, blockchain offers additional use cases in education, and it can certainly make it more convenient and effective.

One such use case is test preparation and online learning, which can help students improve faster. Then, there is a large potential when it comes to information services and libraries, as it is easy to keep track of data stored on blockchain. Meanwhile, data stored in current, more outdated methods can be difficult to keep track of, as it is mostly scattered in different systems.

Finally, there is the issue of transportation, as students need to have a convenient and practical way of traveling from home to school and vice versa. While things like ridesharing apps can already be used today, using them in combination with blockchain technology would improve even more, which can be particularly useful for students with special needs.
